Chapter 16
Kaitlyn tried to scream, but the hand pressed tighter, and her teeth cut into her lips. Nobody would have heard her over the noise in the pub anyway. In the dimness of the hall, she struggled until another man approached, and she recognized his gold-toothed smile.
“I’ll be askin’ ye to come with us, miss.” He spoke, opening his jacket to show a pistol tucked into his waistband. “We’d appreciate it if ye weren’t to make a fuss.” He lifted the weapon and examined it as he leaned closer.
Kaitlyn’s knees weakened, and her legs shook.
“Now, can we count on ye to keep yer voice down, then?”
Blinking hard against her tears, she nodded. Kaitlyn should be looking for an escape or fighting back—how many times had she seen this exact scenario on procedural crime dramas?—but the sight of the gun froze her insides, and her mind went blank. When she was released, she swayed, and the man pulled her against him, keeping his arm around her as they walked through a back door and into the cool evening air.
He pushed her into the back seat of a car and slid in next to her, while Gold Tooth got into the driver’s seat. Kaitlyn glanced at the face of the man beside her, and she stiffened when she recognized the man in the leather jacket. She scooted away and pulled on the door handle, but the door wouldn’t open.
“Don’t ye be leavin’ just yet.” The driver turned in his seat and smiled. “Ye’ve got something we’re needin’.” Leather jacket guy was watching her, seemingly content to let Gold Tooth do the talking. “Now if ye don’t mind, I’ll be askin’ ye fer yer necklace.”
Kaitlyn looked back and forth between the two men. Her sluggish brain had kicked back into gear, and her mind raced. So, Connor had been telling the truth about the necklace? A weight settled into her stomach. Connor had been protecting her all along. From this very thing, and she’d acted like a—she cut her thoughts short as the driver started the car and began driving.
Kaitlyn looked past him, figuring out which direction they were going. And how to escape. Why didn’t she fight these guys? Everybody knew if an abductor took his victim to a second location, the chance of escape decreased. She should have left a clue for the police, dropped a shred of her hem or something they could use to track her. Or screamed. Why hadn’t she made a scene? Or at least tried to attract attention? And Connor. How long before he knew she was gone? Would he think she had just left? Would he go back to the manor and not even wonder where she was? Would anyone come looking for her? Her breath came in quick gasps.
“Perhaps ye didn’t hear me, Miss Donovan.” Gold Tooth watched her in the rear-view mirror. “I asked for yer necklace.”
Kaitlyn found her voice and spoke with a bravery she didn’t feel, hoping to hide her terror. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.
